GRANT:
Breaking Barriers is a film grant Joyce & Laureen Callo created 10 years ago which is given annually to a female filmmaker who is making her thesis film to earn her MFA at Columbia University, NYC. “Breaking Barriers” has also secured a sizeable matching grant from large foundation which prefers to remain anonymous. The grant is awarded annually.
According to VARIETY, “…the film business found itself regressing in 2021 with women comprising 17% of directors on the top 250 grossing movies, down 18% from 2020. (Source: Celluloid Ceiling, a report produced annually by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University). This annual grant aims to make a course correction. Seeing first-hand the challenges women in the business face, Joyce Callo wanted to give back and help create change for women.
